Chapter 17: The Woman Who Pulled the Trigger

Chapter 17: The Woman Who Pulled the Trigger
The gunshot echoed through the bunker like a thunderclap.
Victor staggered backward.
Blood spread across the front of his white shirt.
For one frozen second, nobody moved.
Then Maya screamed.
"NO!"
I pulled both girls behind me as FBI agents raised their weapons.
"Drop the gun!"
Allison Reed stood at the end of the hallway, perfectly calm.
The pistol in her hand didn't tremble.
Victor looked down at the blood blooming across his chest.
Then he looked up at Allison with something I never expected to see.
Betrayal.
"You promised..." he whispered.
Allison smiled coldly.
"I promised whatever would keep you useful."
The Last Escape
The moment the FBI advanced, Allison fired again.
The bullet shattered a light above our heads, plunging half the corridor into darkness.
"Move!" Ross shouted.
Agents surged forward.
Allison retreated deeper into the tunnel network.
Marcus sprinted after her.
"She's heading for the north exit!"
I knelt beside Victor.
Blood covered my hands within seconds.
"Stay with me."
He laughed weakly.
"After everything..."
"...you're still trying to save me."
"You're Maya's uncle."
The words hit him harder than the bullet.
He looked toward Maya.
Tears streamed down her face.
For the first time, he seemed to truly see her.
Not as an heir.
Not as a symbol.
Just a frightened little girl.
A Brother's Confession
Victor coughed, wincing.
"Richard..."
I leaned closer.
"Save your strength."
"No."
His voice was fading.
"You need to know."
I glanced at Ross, who nodded.
"Talk."
Victor swallowed painfully.
"The night Sarah died..."
"...she called me."
I froze.
"What?"
"After she discovered the medication had been changed."
"She knew someone inside the hospital had been bribed."
"Why didn't she call me?"
His eyes filled with regret.
"She didn't want you dragged into it until she had proof."
I felt my chest tighten.
Sarah had been protecting me.
Even while she was dying.
Victor continued.
"She asked me for help."
I stared at him.
"You helped her?"
"I tried."
He closed his eyes briefly.
"I met her in the hospital parking garage."
"She gave me copies of the medical records."
"She told me if anything happened to her..."
"...I had to protect Maya."
The irony was almost unbearable.
The man I had spent days hunting had once been asked by my wife to protect our daughter.
The Missing Evidence
Victor reached weakly into his coat.
Ross immediately tensed.
"It's okay," I said.
Victor pulled out a small waterproof pouch.
"I kept this hidden from everyone."
Inside were several documents.
Hospital access logs.
Pharmacy records.
And one employee authorization form.
The signature at the bottom belonged to Allison Reed.
Ross's eyes widened.
"This is enough for a murder warrant."
Victor nodded faintly.
"Sarah collected it."
"Then why wasn't it turned in?"
"Because Allison found out."
He coughed again, blood staining his lips.
"Sarah hid the originals."
I looked at him sharply.
"Where?"
Victor managed a faint smile.
"In the one place Allison never searched."
The Library
Above us, the mansion was finally secure.
Bomb technicians continued disarming the remaining devices.
SWAT teams swept every room.
Marcus's voice crackled over the radio.
"Allison has reached the east service tunnel. We're in pursuit."
Ross turned to another team.
"Seal every exit."
Then he looked back at Victor.
"Where are the originals?"
Victor's breathing had become shallow.
"Sarah's library."
I frowned.
"Her study?"
He shook his head.
"No."
"The public library."
"She rented a private archival locker under a different name."
Daniel, listening through the command channel, suddenly spoke.
"That's why I never found it."
Victor looked at me one last time.
"She never stopped fighting for Maya."
The Chase
A burst of gunfire echoed through the tunnels.
Marcus shouted over the radio.
"Contact! Contact!"
Ross immediately stood.
"Stay with the children."
I wanted to follow.
Instead, I wrapped my arms around Maya and Emily.
Emily was shaking uncontrollably.
"It's over," I told her.
"We're getting you out of here."
She looked up at me.
"Will I have to go back to him?"
The question broke my heart.
"No."
"Never again."
Maya took Emily's hand.
"You can stay with us until you're not scared anymore."
Emily burst into tears.
Allison Cornered
Marcus's radio crackled again.
"We've got her trapped!"
Cheers erupted among the agents.
Then came a sharp, metallic clang.
"Watch out!"
A smoke grenade exploded in the tunnel.
Visibility vanished.
By the time the smoke cleared...
Allison was gone.
Ross cursed.
"How?"
Marcus pointed toward a narrow maintenance shaft.
"She knew the tunnels better than we did."
A technician checked the exterior cameras.
"Wait..."
"I have movement."
The monitor showed a lone figure emerging from a storm drain nearly half a mile from the estate.
Allison.
She climbed into a dark sedan and sped away.
Ross slammed a fist against the wall.
"She just escaped."
Victor's Final Words
Back in the bunker, paramedics loaded Victor onto a stretcher.
As they prepared to move him, he caught my wrist.
"Richard."
I leaned closer.
"If I survive..."
"...I know I don't deserve forgiveness."
I said nothing.
He looked toward Maya.
"But tell her this."
Maya stepped forward cautiously.
Victor's eyes softened.
"Your mother loved you more than anything in this world."
Maya nodded through tears.
"I know."
A faint smile touched his face.
Then he lost consciousness.
The Discovery
Hours later, after the estate had been declared safe, Daniel arrived with urgent news.
"We found the archival locker."
I stood.
"What was inside?"
He held up a sealed evidence box.
"Everything."
Medical records.
Bank transfers.
Recorded phone calls.
Bribery payments.
And a handwritten statement signed by Sarah less than twenty-four hours before her death.
Daniel looked at me gravely.
"Richard..."
"This isn't just evidence of murder."
He opened the top file.
"It's evidence of a conspiracy involving the hospital, the trust, and multiple public officials."
I stared at the stack of documents.
The nightmare wasn't over.
We had rescued Maya.
We had stopped the bombs.
But Sarah's death had just become a homicide investigation.
And somewhere out there...
May you like
Allison Reed was still free.
