Chapter 15: The Underground Truth

Chapter 15: The Underground Truth

The steel shutters slammed into place with a deafening crash.

Every window disappeared behind reinforced metal.

The mansion became a prison.

Outside, Agent Ross shouted into his radio.

"Entry team, breach now!"

A battering ram slammed against the front door.

Nothing.

Again.

The massive oak door barely moved.

Marcus looked up at the second-floor windows.

"They've been reinforced from the inside."

Ross turned to the bomb technician.

"How long?"

The technician's voice came through the headset.

"Seven minutes, twelve seconds."

"We don't have time."

Beneath the House

Victor walked calmly down the hidden staircase.

Emily stayed close to me.

I wasn't about to let her out of my sight.

The staircase descended nearly thirty feet beneath the mansion before opening into a massive underground chamber.

I stopped.

The room looked nothing like I expected.

It wasn't a bunker.

It was a museum.

Photographs covered every wall.

Old newspaper clippings.

Family portraits.

Letters.

Legal documents.

The entire history of the Harrington family.

Victor spread his arms.

"Welcome home."

The Wall of Names

I stepped closer to one wall.

Hundreds of names had been carefully written across black marble.

Some were crossed out.

Others circled in red.

At the center...

One name stood alone.

Sarah Harrington.

Below it were two smaller names.

Richard Sterling.

Maya Sterling.

I looked at Victor.

"What is this?"

"My family tree."

"No."

"It's your obsession."

Victor smiled.

"Perhaps."

Sarah's Recording

On an antique wooden desk sat an old cassette recorder.

Victor pressed the Play button.

Static filled the room.

Then...

Sarah's voice.

"Victor...

If you're hearing this...

Then you've ignored everything I ever begged you to understand."

I stared at the recorder.

Victor had been listening to this all along.

Sarah continued.

"You think Father rejected you because he loved me more.

That's not true."

Victor's smile slowly faded.

"He rejected you because you frightened people.

Even as a child."

Victor's jaw tightened.

"You hurt animals.

You manipulated children.

You blamed everyone else for your choices."

The room was silent except for Sarah's voice.

"You weren't abandoned.

You chose this path."

Victor suddenly slammed his fist into the table.

"Enough!"

The recorder crashed to the floor.

For the first time...

His calm mask cracked.

Emily's Courage

Emily quietly picked up the broken recorder.

She looked at Victor.

"My father used to tell me..."

"...people who tell the truth don't get angry."

Victor turned slowly toward her.

"You know nothing about fathers."

Emily stepped closer to me.

"I know enough."

Victor laughed bitterly.

"Richard."

"Do you see?"

"They always choose you."

I frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

"My daughter chose Sarah."

"Emily chose you."

"And Maya..."

He looked toward the ceiling.

"...never chose me."

His voice wasn't angry anymore.

It was broken.

For a brief moment...

I saw not a criminal mastermind...

But a man consumed by decades of bitterness.

The Final Confession

Victor sank into an old wooden chair.

"I never wanted to kill Sarah."

My heart pounded.

"What?"

"I wanted her to leave."

He stared at the floor.

"I paid someone inside the hospital to frighten her."

"Not to hurt her."

My hands clenched into fists.

"But someone changed her medication."

Victor slowly nodded.

"I found out too late."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"I spent years searching."

Agent Ross's voice suddenly echoed through my hidden earpiece.

"Keep him talking."

"We're almost inside."

Victor looked directly at me.

"You think I'm the monster."

"You are."

"Perhaps."

"But I didn't murder my sister."

I searched his face.

For the first time...

I couldn't tell if he was lying.

The Real Killer

Suddenly...

The old projector at the end of the room flickered to life.

None of us had touched it.

A grainy surveillance video appeared on the wall.

Hospital corridor.

Four years earlier.

Sarah's hospital room.

The timestamp matched the night before she died.

A nurse entered the room.

She looked around carefully.

Then removed Sarah's medication.

She replaced it with another vial.

I leaned closer.

"Zoom in."

The projector automatically enlarged the image.

The nurse turned toward the hallway.

Her face became clear.

I froze.

"No..."

It couldn't be.

Daniel's voice crackled through my earpiece from outside.

"Richard..."

"I know her."

It was the same nurse who had cared for Sarah during her final weeks.

The woman who had hugged me at the funeral.

The woman who told me Sarah had passed peacefully.

Victor looked just as shocked as I was.

"I've never seen this recording."

I turned toward him.

"You didn't do this?"

Before he could answer...

The entire underground chamber shook violently.

The bomb technician screamed over the radio.

"The timer just hit one minute!"

Emergency lights flashed red.

A computerized voice echoed through the bunker.

FINAL DETONATION SEQUENCE ACTIVATED.

Agent Ross's voice thundered from above.

"Richard!"

"We're through the front door!"

"Get out of there!"

Victor slowly looked at the ceiling.

Then whispered something I never expected to hear.

"They betrayed me too."

The floor beneath us trembled again.

Concrete cracked.

Dust poured from the ceiling.

May you like

We had less than sixty seconds to escape.
