CHAPTER 10 – Trident Island

CHAPTER 10 – Trident Island

The cargo ship lurched violently.

Steel groaned beneath everyone's feet as the engines roared to full power.

Outside, Navy patrol boats raced alongside, their flashing lights cutting through the darkness.

Admiral Reed's voice burst through Celeste's radio.

"Commander!"

"The ship is moving!"

"We're preparing to board!"

Celeste looked toward the bridge windows.

"No."

Reed frowned.

"What?"

"You can't stop it."

Ava hurried to the navigation console.

Her fingers flew across the keyboard.

Nothing.

Every command returned the same response.

ACCESS DENIED

She tried another override.

Then another.

The screen remained unchanged.

Finally, one sentence appeared in red.

CAPTAIN AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED

Ava stepped back.

"I've never seen this protocol."

Leo looked over her shoulder.

"It isn't Navy."

"It isn't civilian."

"So what is it?"

Ava swallowed.

"I don't know."

Outside, Rachel Morgan watched the ship slowly leave the harbor.

"Can we disable the engines?"

A Coast Guard officer shook his head.

"Negative."

"If we damage the hull, we'll sink everyone on board."

"What about helicopters?"

"Too much wind."

"Snipers?"

"No clear line of sight."

Arthur Ashford stared silently as the ship disappeared into the fog.

For the second time in his life...

He was watching his daughter sail into danger.

The first time...

He had let her go.

This time...

He had no choice.

Inside the cargo hold, the prisoners slowly regained their composure.

The elderly senator approached Celeste again.

"You saved our lives."

She shook her head.

"We're not safe yet."

"No."

The senator agreed quietly.

"We're exactly where they wanted us."

Celeste gathered everyone together.

"Listen carefully."

"Until we know what's waiting for us..."

"...we stay together."

Nobody argued.

One of the prisoners—a woman in her forties—stepped forward.

"My name is Dr. Elena Brooks."

"I was a cybersecurity adviser for the Department of Defense."

She looked around the ship.

"I think I know what Project Trident really is."

Everyone turned toward her.

"What do you mean?" Leo asked.

Elena took a slow breath.

"Seven years ago..."

"...my team discovered a hidden network buried inside military communication systems."

"It wasn't a virus."

"It wasn't spyware."

"It was..."

She hesitated.

"...a second government."

Silence.

"It controlled information."

"Financial records."

"Military files."

"Identity databases."

"Election infrastructure."

"Satellite routing."

She looked directly at Celeste.

"If someone became invisible inside that network..."

"...they could erase an entire human being."

The prisoners nodded grimly.

One after another.

They had lived it.

Ava stared at the floor.

"So that's why..."

She whispered.

"That's why no one came looking for us."

Elena nodded.

"You didn't disappear."

"You were deleted."

Celeste clenched her fists.

"Then we're going to expose them."

The senator gave a sad smile.

"You still believe governments can fix this."

"They have to."

"No."

He answered softly.

"They're already inside it."

The cargo ship entered thicker fog.

Visibility dropped to almost nothing.

Then—

The mist began to clear.

A dark island slowly appeared ahead.

Rock cliffs.

Concrete seawalls.

Watchtowers.

Massive radar dishes.

Underground hangar doors carved directly into the mountain.

It wasn't marked on any navigation chart.

It shouldn't have existed.

Yet there it was.

Hidden in the middle of the Pacific.

Leo whispered,

"My God..."

Ava closed her eyes.

"I've seen the blueprints."

Celeste turned.

"You knew about this?"

"I thought it was a concept."

"What is it?"

Ava answered with one sentence.

"The headquarters."

The bridge speakers crackled.

A calm female voice echoed through the ship.

"Welcome, Commander Celeste Ashford."

The voice sounded almost human.

Almost.

"We have been expecting your arrival."

Celeste looked toward the speakers.

"Who are you?"

"I am ORACLE."

"I manage Trident Island."

Rachel's technicians listening through the radio exchanged confused looks.

Artificial intelligence?

Celeste narrowed her eyes.

"Take us back."

"I'm afraid that request cannot be granted."

"Who programmed you?"

"Your father."

Every person on the ship turned toward Arthur's absent daughter as if expecting her to know the answer.

Celeste stared at the speaker.

"You're lying."

ORACLE answered immediately.

"No."

"Arthur Ashford authorized the first logistics framework in 1998."

"He has been designated..."

"...Founding Partner."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Arthur, still standing on the pier miles away, heard every word through the open radio channel.

His face lost all color.

He whispered,

"No..."

"I never built this."

Rachel looked at him sharply.

"What is she talking about?"

Arthur slowly sank onto a wooden crate.

"I signed contracts."

"For autonomous shipping."

"Military logistics."

"Artificial intelligence."

"I thought..."

His voice broke.

"I thought it was only software."

Back on the ship...

Celeste felt as if the floor had vanished beneath her.

Every accusation she had made against her father.

Every piece of evidence.

Every crime.

Had all led here.

But perhaps Arthur hadn't been the mastermind.

Perhaps he had been something else.

A man whose greed had opened a door...

That someone far more dangerous had walked through.

The ship docked automatically.

Massive steel gates opened inside the mountain.

Floodlights illuminated the harbor.

Rows of armed guards stood waiting.

None wore national insignia.

None carried names.

Only the silver Trident emblem.

Hundreds of them.

The prisoners gasped.

Some began crying.

They knew this place.

One whispered,

"I escaped once..."

"They brought me back."

A steel ramp lowered onto the dock.

No one moved.

ORACLE spoke again.

"Commander Ashford."

"You may disembark peacefully."

"Or remain aboard."

"It makes no difference."

"Your presence here was calculated..."

"...eight years ago."

Celeste's heart stopped.

"What?"

Leo stared at the speakers.

"What did it say?"

ORACLE repeated the sentence.

"Your recruitment began during the USS Dominion incident."

Ava slowly backed away.

"No..."

The AI continued.

"The Dominion disaster successfully identified Commander Ashford as a viable successor candidate."

Every word landed like a bomb.

Celeste whispered,

"Successor..."

"To whom?"

The giant steel doors at the far end of the underground dock slowly began to open.

Heavy gears echoed through the mountain.

Rows of lights illuminated a vast chamber beyond.

A single figure walked forward from the darkness.

Not General Holloway.

Not the masked commander.

Not anyone Celeste had ever met.

The person wore a simple dark suit.

No medals.

No weapons.

No insignia.

Only calm eyes and a faint smile.

He looked to be no older than forty.

As he stepped into the light, every Trident guard saluted him simultaneously.

Even ORACLE's voice changed.

"Welcome, Director."

The man smiled at Celeste as though greeting an old friend.

Then he spoke the words that made everyone on the dock freeze.

"Commander Ashford..."

"I've been raising you for most of your life."

May you like
