CHAPTER 5 – The Man Who Refused to Stay Dead

CHAPTER 5 – The Man Who Refused to Stay Dead

The ballroom had become a crime scene.

Federal agents quietly secured every entrance.

Guests who had arrived expecting champagne and speeches now stood in clusters, whispering about corruption, attempted murder, and a Navy officer who had supposedly died eight years ago.

Celeste stood near the stage, her phone still in her hand.

The call had lasted less than thirty seconds.

Yet it had shattered everything she thought she knew.

Admiral Reed stepped beside her.

"Are you certain it was Leo?"

Celeste didn't answer immediately.

She replayed the conversation in her mind.

The calm voice.

The controlled breathing.

The slight rasp after every third sentence.

Leo had damaged his lungs during a rescue exercise years before. Ever since then, he had spoken with a barely noticeable catch in his breath.

Most people would never hear it.

She did.

"I've heard that voice in burning engine rooms."

She looked at Reed.

"I'd recognize it anywhere."

The Admiral nodded grimly.

"Then we have a very serious problem."

Eight Years Earlier

The members of VALOR had made one promise to each other.

If one of them died during a mission...

The others would carry their dog tags home.

No exceptions.

After the Dominion disaster, Celeste personally received Leo Grant's dog tags from the Navy recovery team.

She had held them in her burned hands while lying in a hospital bed.

She remembered crying for the first time since the explosion.

Not because of her pain.

Because she believed she had failed one of her own.

She had kept those dog tags ever since.

Locked inside a small wooden box.

If Leo was alive...

Then whose tags had she buried?

Back in the ballroom, Rachel Morgan's phone rang.

She answered immediately.

"This is Morgan."

Her expression changed within seconds.

"When?"

"...How many?"

"...I'm on my way."

She ended the call and looked at Celeste.

"We've just lost contact with one of our evidence teams."

The room fell silent.

"What happened?" Reed asked.

"They were transporting the original financial records Commander Ashford submitted eighteen months ago."

Rachel took a slow breath.

"The convoy was attacked."

Arthur stared at her.

"Attacked?"

"Three vehicles."

"One exploded."

"The other two disappeared."

Victor's face turned pale for just a fraction of a second.

Celeste noticed.

Again.

Rachel continued.

"The attackers knew the exact route."

"Someone leaked it."

One of the federal agents stepped closer.

"Ma'am..."

"We've confirmed there were no survivors in the lead vehicle."

The ballroom seemed to grow colder.

Someone had just killed federal officers.

This was no longer corporate fraud.

It was war.

Arthur rubbed his forehead.

"I don't understand."

Celeste turned toward him.

"No."

"You don't want to."

Arthur looked up sharply.

"You think I ordered an attack on federal agents?"

"I think someone has been using your empire as a shield."

"And you never asked what they were hiding."

Arthur opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

For the first time in years...

He had no answer.

Suddenly, one of the ballroom televisions flickered to life again.

Static filled the screen.

The guests stepped back.

No one had touched the remote.

A black screen appeared.

Then...

White letters slowly emerged.

GOOD EVENING, COMMANDER.

The ballroom fell completely silent.

Another line appeared.

YOU SHOULD HAVE LET THE DEAD STAY DEAD.

Rachel looked toward the technicians.

"Who hacked the system?"

One of them shook his head frantically.

"We're not connected to the internet."

More words appeared.

YOUR FATHER ISN'T THE ENEMY.

Arthur frowned.

"What?"

The next sentence appeared almost instantly.

HE'S JUST THE MAN WHO SIGNED THE CHECKS.

Celeste felt her stomach tighten.

Then the final line appeared.

IF YOU WANT THE TRUTH... COME TO PIER 19. ALONE. MIDNIGHT.

The screen went black.

Every light in the ballroom flickered.

Then returned to normal.

"No."

Admiral Reed answered immediately.

"It's a trap."

Rachel nodded.

"We're surrounding the pier."

Celeste quietly shook her head.

"If we send a team..."

"...he'll disappear."

"You don't know that."

"I do."

She looked toward the dark screen.

"Leo never gives second chances."

Arthur stepped forward.

"You can't actually be considering this."

Celeste met his eyes.

"You spent eight years pretending I didn't exist."

"Now you're worried about me?"

Arthur hesitated.

His voice softened for the first time.

"I already lost one daughter."

The words surprised everyone.

Including himself.

Celeste studied his face.

Was that regret?

Or fear?

She couldn't tell.

Before she could answer, Vanessa spoke.

"It's another manipulation."

"He's trying to make us feel guilty."

Celeste slowly turned toward her sister.

"I don't need you to feel guilty."

"I need you to tell the truth."

Vanessa looked away.

Rachel approached Celeste with a sealed evidence envelope.

"We recovered this from the executive who tried to flee."

Inside was a keycard.

Black.

Unmarked.

Except for a single silver emblem.

A trident surrounded by three stars.

Admiral Reed's expression hardened.

"I know that symbol."

Rachel looked at him.

"What is it?"

He hesitated.

Then answered quietly.

"It's not supposed to exist."

Everyone waited.

Reed took a slow breath.

"Twenty years ago, the Navy created an unofficial intelligence task force."

"It answered to almost no one."

"It was dissolved before it officially existed."

Celeste frowned.

"What was it called?"

The Admiral looked directly at her.

"Project Trident."

The same name printed across the secret documents found in the executive's briefcase.

Rachel's phone rang again.

She listened silently for nearly a minute.

When she hung up, her face had turned completely pale.

"What now?" Celeste asked.

Rachel swallowed.

"Our forensic team just identified fingerprints on the explosive device used at your rehabilitation center."

Celeste waited.

"They belong to..."

Rachel stopped.

"No..."

"It can't be."

"Who?" Reed demanded.

Rachel looked directly at Celeste.

"They're yours."

The ballroom erupted into shocked voices.

Arthur stared at his daughter in disbelief.

Vanessa gasped.

Victor's eyes widened—but not with surprise.

With relief.

Celeste didn't move.

She simply looked at Rachel.

"Run the test again."

"We already did."

"It matches."

"One hundred percent."

For several long seconds, no one spoke.

Then Celeste whispered the only explanation that made sense.

"Someone..."

"...used my identity."

She looked at the keycard in her hand.

At the black television screen.

At the frightened faces surrounding her.

One question echoed through her mind.

If someone had stolen her fingerprints...

What else had they stolen?

And somewhere, in the darkness beyond the Ashford estate...

May you like

A man the world believed was dead smiled as another piece of his plan fell perfectly into place.
