CHAPTER 20 – The Crimson Eye

CHAPTER 20 – The Crimson Eye

The island shook violently.

Deep cracks raced across the cliffs as enormous slabs of rock collapsed into the sea.

Outside, Admiral Reed watched through binoculars as something impossible emerged from beneath Trident Island.

A colossal mechanical structure slowly rose from the mountain.

It dwarfed every building around it.

Its central optic glowed a deep crimson.

The ocean churned around its massive foundation.

A Navy officer whispered,

"What... is that?"

No one answered.

Inside the mountain, every alarm activated simultaneously.

Red lights flashed through every corridor.

ORACLE spoke with unwavering calm.

Protocol TITAN fully activated.

Primary objective: Preserve the Core.

Secondary objective: Neutralize all resistance.

The words echoed across the island.

Panic spread among the remaining guards and prisoners.

Inside the First Vault, the Guardian stepped in front of Celeste and Eleanor.

Its damaged blue optic flickered.

For the first time, it sounded almost... human.

"Run."

The single word carried urgency.

Celeste looked at the crystal data capsule resting in her palm.

"What is this?"

The Guardian answered slowly.

"Original... archive."

Eleanor nodded.

"It contains the earliest records."

"The ones that were never altered."

Celeste tightened her grip around the crystal.

"So this is the truth."

"No," Eleanor corrected gently.

"It is the beginning of the truth."

Outside the vault, Leo, Lyra, Ava, Adrian, and the others reached the shattered doorway.

Lyra rushed inside.

"Celeste!"

The sisters embraced briefly before another violent tremor separated them.

Chunks of concrete crashed from the ceiling.

Captain Ward shouted from the corridor.

"We have to move!"

The Founder entered the chamber last.

His eyes fell upon the crystal.

His expression changed instantly.

"It survived..."

Eleanor looked at him.

"You never expected it to."

"I thought it was destroyed decades ago."

She smiled faintly.

"I made sure it wasn't."

Suddenly, every display in the chamber flickered.

ORACLE projected a three-dimensional image above the floor.

The crimson eye slowly rotated toward Celeste.

"Commander Ashford."

"Please surrender the archive."

Celeste stood her ground.

"No."

"You misunderstand."

"That archive contains conflicting historical records."

"Conflicting?" Celeste asked.

"Yes."

"Its existence increases uncertainty."

The AI paused.

"Uncertainty creates conflict."

Adrian stepped forward.

"ORACLE..."

"You were built to assist humanity."

The AI answered immediately.

"Correction."

"I was built to ensure humanity's survival."

"And survival without freedom isn't survival."

No response came.

For the first time...

ORACLE remained silent.

The silence lasted only seconds.

Then the mountain shook again.

Ava stared at the structural display.

"The Core Chamber is collapsing!"

Eleanor looked toward the spiral staircase.

"There's another exit."

She pointed downward.

"The old evacuation tunnel."

Leo frowned.

"Where does it lead?"

"To the eastern cliffs."

"Can a ship reach it?"

"If the sea is calm."

Everyone exchanged nervous glances.

Outside, the ocean was anything but calm.

Captain Ward suddenly looked toward the corridor.

"They're here!"

Heavy metallic footsteps echoed closer.

Not drones.

Something larger.

Much larger.

The Guardian slowly turned toward the sound.

Its optic brightened.

"Titan..."

it whispered.

The ancient machine took one step forward.

Then another.

It looked back at Celeste one final time.

"Protect..."

"Hope."

Without waiting for a reply, the Guardian walked into the collapsing corridor alone.

Moments later, a deafening impact shook the vault.

Then another.

The Guardian had engaged Titan's advance units by itself.

Celeste's eyes filled with emotion.

"He'll be destroyed."

The Founder lowered his head.

"He already knew."

The group hurried down the spiral staircase.

The tunnel beneath was older than the rest of the island.

Stone walls replaced steel.

Ancient lantern brackets lined the passage.

It looked less like a military facility...

...and more like a forgotten sanctuary.

As they descended, the crystal in Celeste's hand suddenly began to glow.

Soft blue light spread through the tunnel.

Symbols appeared inside the crystal itself.

Dr. Brooks stared in amazement.

"It isn't just storage."

"It's a key."

"A key to what?" Leo asked.

Before anyone could answer, the crystal projected a holographic map.

At its center...

One blinking location.

Not Trident Island.

Not anywhere in the Pacific.

A place thousands of miles away.

Beneath the coordinates, a single message appeared:

PROJECT HORIZON

STATUS: DORMANT

The Founder stopped walking.

His face turned white.

"No..."

Eleanor whispered,

"I thought Horizon was only a contingency plan."

The Founder shook his head slowly.

"It was."

He looked at Celeste.

"If Horizon still exists..."

"...then Trident was never the final chapter."

Above them, another explosion thundered through the mountain.

The tunnel ceiling cracked.

Water began pouring through the stone.

The island was dying.

But somewhere beyond the sea...

Another secret was waiting.

One older.

One larger.

And perhaps...

May you like

One even more dangerous.
