CHAPTER 11 – The Director's Secret

CHAPTER 11 – The Director's Secret

The underground harbor fell silent.

Hundreds of armed guards remained perfectly still, their salute frozen in place as the man in the dark suit stepped into the light.

He wasn't a general.

He wasn't a politician.

He wasn't a billionaire.

He carried no visible symbol of authority.

Yet everyone obeyed him.

Even the artificial intelligence, ORACLE.

"Welcome, Director."

The title echoed through the vast chamber.

Celeste stood motionless at the bottom of the cargo ship's ramp.

The Director smiled as though greeting an old friend.

"I've been raising you for most of your life."

"No," Celeste replied, her voice calm. "My parents raised me."

The Director tilted his head.

"They gave you your name."

"They gave you your home."

"But they never shaped the person you became."

He gestured toward the scars across her shoulders.

"Those did."

Leo stepped between them.

"Stay away from her."

The Director barely glanced at him.

"You were always loyal."

"Predictably so."

Leo's jaw tightened.

"You faked my death."

"No."

The Director answered almost casually.

"You accepted an impossible choice."

"You could disappear..."

"...or everyone you loved would."

Silence.

Celeste slowly turned toward Leo.

"You knew him."

Leo closed his eyes.

"Only once."

Eight Years Earlier

Following the disaster aboard the USS Dominion, Leo awoke in a military hospital.

A man in a dark suit sat beside his bed.

No name.

No rank.

Only a single question.

"Do you want Commander Ashford to survive?"

Leo answered without hesitation.

"Yes."

"Then disappear."

"If the world believes you're dead..."

"...she lives."

Leo had refused.

The next day, every official record listed him as killed in action.

His identity vanished.

His family received a funeral.

He never saw them again.

Present Day

"I searched for you," Celeste whispered.

Leo looked down.

"I know."

"I read every report."

"I know."

"You let me mourn you."

"I was trying to keep you alive."

Tears formed in Celeste's eyes, but she forced them back.

"This isn't protection."

"It's theft."

The Director applauded softly.

"Excellent."

"The emotional response remains intact."

Celeste frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means I was correct."

"About what?"

"You're still capable of compassion."

His answer made no sense.

Dr. Elena Brooks stepped forward.

"You've imprisoned innocent people."

The Director nodded.

"Some of them."

"You erased identities."

"Some identities."

"You destroyed families."

"I prevented wars."

The prisoners erupted in angry voices.

The Director simply waited for them to finish.

Then he spoke.

"The world enjoys simple stories."

"Heroes."

"Villains."

"Good."

"Evil."

"The real world is rarely so convenient."

Ava stared at him.

"You manipulated all of us."

"I offered opportunities."

"You lied."

"I withheld information."

"That's the same thing."

"Not always."

The Director turned back toward Celeste.

"I've read every evaluation ever written about you."

"Every training report."

"Every commendation."

"Every disciplinary record."

He smiled.

"Do you know what every instructor wrote?"

Celeste said nothing.

"They all used the same word."

"Unbreakable."

The massive doors behind him opened further.

Beyond them stretched an enormous operations center unlike anything Celeste had ever seen.

Rows of analysts.

Towering digital displays.

Maps of oceans.

Cargo routes.

Emergency response networks.

It looked less like a military headquarters...

...and more like the control room of a civilization.

Rachel Morgan's voice suddenly crackled over Celeste's secure radio.

"We've got your signal again!"

Celeste quietly pressed the transmit button without drawing attention.

"I'm alive."

"We've tracked the island."

"Can you send reinforcements?"

Celeste looked around.

Hundreds of guards.

Unknown defenses.

Dozens of civilians standing behind her.

She answered carefully.

"No."

Rachel hesitated.

"What?"

"If you attack..."

"...people will die."

The Director smiled.

"You've already learned the first lesson."

"I haven't learned anything from you."

"Haven't you?"

He pointed toward the prisoners.

"You chose their lives over revenge."

He then gestured toward the island.

"And now you're choosing restraint over violence."

Celeste narrowed her eyes.

"I choose what's right."

The Director nodded once.

"Exactly."

An alarm suddenly echoed through the underground harbor.

A guard hurried toward the Director.

"Sir!"

"Report."

"There's been an unauthorized breach."

The Director frowned for the first time.

"Location?"

"Sector Nine."

"Impossible."

The guard swallowed.

"The security system confirms it."

The Director turned sharply.

"Who entered?"

The guard answered with visible confusion.

"The records identify the intruder as..."

He checked the tablet again.

"...Commander Celeste Ashford."

The entire chamber fell silent.

Every eye turned toward Celeste.

She had never been here before.

So why did the island's security system believe...

May you like

...she already had?
