CHAPTER 13 – The Sister in the Shadows

CHAPTER 13 – The Sister in the Shadows

The words echoed through the underground harbor.

"I'm your sister."

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Even the guards seemed to forget their orders as every eye remained fixed on the giant screen.

Celeste stared at the woman.

The same eyes.

The same voice.

The same determined expression she saw in the mirror every morning.

Except this woman carried none of Celeste's warmth.

Only certainty.

"No..."

Celeste whispered.

"This isn't possible."

The woman smiled faintly.

"I knew you would say that."

She took one slow step toward the camera.

"My name is..."

She paused.

"...Lyra."

"I was told your name was Celeste."

"For twenty-eight years, I wondered what kind of life you had."

"And now..."

"...I finally know."

Arthur's voice suddenly came through Celeste's radio from the command ship.

"Celeste..."

Her hands tightened around the radio.

"Did you know?"

Several seconds passed before he answered.

"No."

"I swear to you."

"When the doctors told us your sister had died..."

"...we believed them."

Celeste closed her eyes.

For the first time since arriving on the island...

She wanted to believe him.

The Director remained unusually quiet.

His gaze never left the screen.

"You survived..."

he murmured.

Lyra looked directly into the camera.

"I survived because someone decided I was useful."

The Director's expression hardened.

"Who?"

Lyra smiled.

"You."

The chamber fell silent again.

"I've never met you," the Director replied.

"You don't remember."

Lyra answered.

"But your predecessors did."

Dr. Elena Brooks stepped toward the nearest terminal.

"Can we verify her identity?"

ORACLE immediately answered.

DNA comparison in progress...

Everyone waited.

The screen flashed.

GENETIC MATCH: 99.9998%

Relationship: Monozygotic Twin

Leo exhaled slowly.

"It... really is her."

Celeste's emotions collided all at once.

Hope.

Shock.

Relief.

Anger.

She had spent years believing she was alone.

Now she had a sister.

But that sister had appeared inside the headquarters of the very organization responsible for countless crimes.

"Why are you here?" Celeste asked.

Lyra's smile faded.

"To finish what should have been finished years ago."

Celeste frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Lyra turned toward the enormous archive behind her.

"You came here looking for the truth."

"I came here to destroy it."

The Director took one step forward.

"If you destroy those servers..."

"...millions of records disappear forever."

Lyra nodded.

"I know."

"So why?"

"Because this archive doesn't just contain evidence."

"It contains instructions."

The room fell silent.

She continued.

"Every hidden account."

"Every undercover identity."

"Every safe house."

"Every witness."

"If the archive falls into the wrong hands..."

"...the damage will never end."

Leo looked toward Celeste.

"She has a point."

Rachel's voice came through the radio.

"We need that evidence."

Ava disagreed.

"If enemy networks copy the archive first..."

"...every protected witness becomes a target."

The debate erupted instantly.

Save the archive?

Or destroy it?

Neither choice felt right.

Suddenly ORACLE interrupted.

Warning.

Multiple unauthorized network connections detected.

The Director looked up sharply.

"How many?"

Current estimate: Forty-seven external intrusion attempts.

Dr. Brooks whispered,

"They've found the island."

Across the giant display, red warning icons spread rapidly.

Different organizations.

Different countries.

Different hacking groups.

All trying to access the archive at the same time.

It wasn't just Project Trident anymore.

The secret was escaping.

Lyra looked back into the camera.

"We're out of time."

She reached into her jacket and removed a small metallic device.

A cylindrical charge.

The Director immediately recognized it.

"No."

She nodded.

"Yes."

"That explosive will destroy Sector Nine."

"It will also collapse the mountain."

"I know."

"There are thousands of people on this island!"

"I know."

Celeste stepped closer to the screen.

"There has to be another way."

Lyra looked at her for several long seconds.

Then smiled sadly.

"You really are different from me."

"What happened to you?"

"You had a family."

"I had a laboratory."

Those six words explained more than any speech could.

Before Celeste could answer—

The lights across the harbor suddenly dimmed.

ORACLE's voice changed.

No longer calm.

No longer controlled.

It sounded... uncertain.

Critical system conflict detected.

Primary authority challenged.

The Director frowned.

"What does that mean?"

No answer.

Instead, every monitor in the chamber flickered.

Then another face appeared.

Not Lyra.

Not ORACLE.

A man in his seventies with silver hair and piercing eyes.

Unknown to everyone present.

Except the Director.

His face went completely pale.

"No..."

The old man smiled.

"Hello, Adrian."

The Director whispered,

"Founder..."

The chamber froze.

The old man nodded.

"I've been watching."

He looked directly into the camera.

Then, for the first time, at Celeste.

"So..."

"The last Ashford has finally arrived."

Celeste frowned.

"Who are you?"

The old man smiled.

"My name no longer matters."

"But once..."

"...I created Project Trident."

He leaned closer to the camera.

"And tonight..."

May you like

"...I'm taking it back."
