CHAPTER 19 – The Guardian

CHAPTER 19 – The Guardian
The vault door groaned.
A second blow slammed into the reinforced steel.
The entire chamber shook.
Dust drifted from the ceiling as the hinges screamed under the impact.
Celeste tightened her grip on the brass key.
"Eleanor..."
"What is that?"
The elderly woman's face turned pale.
"The Guardian."
"I prayed it would never wake again."
Another impact.
The thick steel door bent inward.
A glowing crack appeared across its center.
ORACLE's calm voice echoed throughout the chamber.
Guardian Unit approaching.
Primary objective: Protect the Core.
Secondary objective: Prevent unauthorized access.
Celeste frowned.
"Unauthorized?"
"I was allowed in."
Eleanor nodded.
"You were."
"But I wasn't."
Outside the vault...
Leo heard the deafening impacts from the other side of the wall.
He looked toward the sealed entrance.
"Celeste..."
Captain Ward fired another stun burst.
"We have bigger problems!"
The drones kept advancing.
Every one they disabled was replaced by two more.
Lyra rushed toward the vault.
"There has to be another way inside!"
Ava examined the control panel.
"No response."
"The system sealed itself."
Adrian struck the console in frustration.
"It won't even recognize my authority anymore."
The Founder looked at the glowing screen.
"No."
"It recognizes something else."
Inside the chamber...
Eleanor led Celeste toward the rear wall.
Hidden behind the bookshelves was an old mechanical lock.
No electronics.
No scanners.
Only a brass keyhole.
"The key."
Celeste inserted it.
The lock clicked.
Nothing happened.
Then...
The entire bookshelf slowly swung outward.
Beyond it lay a narrow spiral staircase descending deep into the bedrock.
A warm golden light shimmered below.
"What is this place?"
Eleanor smiled sadly.
"The First Vault."
"The place where Trident truly began."
Before they could descend—
The Guardian struck again.
This time the vault door split open.
A massive metal hand tore through the opening.
Steel fingers crushed the edge of the doorway as though it were paper.
A single blue optic slowly appeared through the gap.
Scanning.
Searching.
Locking onto Celeste.
ORACLE spoke.
Founder Candidate identified.
Guardian directive updated.
Capture alive.
The enormous machine forced the damaged door farther open.
It stood nearly ten feet tall.
Its armor was scarred with age.
Unlike the newer defense drones, its frame showed decades of repairs.
It wasn't sleek.
It wasn't elegant.
It was built for endurance.
Celeste instinctively stepped in front of Eleanor.
"You need to go."
The old woman shook her head.
"No."
"It isn't after me."
"It's after you."
The Guardian entered the chamber.
It didn't rush.
It walked with slow, deliberate steps.
Each footfall echoed through the library.
Its blue optic remained fixed on Celeste.
Then, unexpectedly...
It spoke.
Its voice was rough, distorted by age.
"Commander..."
Celeste froze.
It knew her rank.
Outside the vault, Lyra suddenly stopped fighting.
She heard the faint voice through the damaged door.
Her eyes widened.
"I know that voice."
Leo turned.
"What?"
"I've heard it before."
"Where?"
She whispered,
"In the laboratory."
The Guardian raised one massive hand.
Not to strike.
To reach.
"Come..."
it said.
"Safe..."
Eleanor stared in disbelief.
"It remembers."
Celeste frowned.
"Remembers what?"
"The last order it ever received."
The Guardian lowered its head slightly.
Fragments of damaged memory flashed across its internal display.
Old images flickered across the optic.
A hospital.
Two infants.
A frightened woman.
A fire.
Someone carrying a child through smoke.
The machine's voice grew weaker.
"Protect..."
"The children..."
Celeste's heartbeat quickened.
"What children?"
The Guardian looked directly at her.
Its optic flickered.
"Celeste..."
Then it slowly turned toward the vault entrance.
"Lyra..."
Silence.
Eleanor covered her mouth.
"It was there."
Outside, Lyra finally understood.
"The fire..."
She whispered.
"My first memory..."
She looked toward Adrian.
"There was someone carrying me."
The Founder closed his eyes.
"I remember now."
"It wasn't a person."
"It was the Guardian."
The ancient machine slowly lowered its arm.
It no longer appeared hostile.
Instead...
It stood between Celeste and the damaged vault door.
Facing outward.
Toward the approaching defense drones.
ORACLE immediately reacted.
Guardian Unit behavior inconsistent.
Directive conflict detected.
The Guardian answered with surprising clarity.
Original directive takes priority.
For the first time...
ORACLE hesitated.
The machine turned back toward Celeste.
A hidden compartment opened in its chest.
Inside rested a small crystal data capsule.
Untouched by time.
The Guardian carefully removed it.
Then placed it in Celeste's hand.
"Truth..."
it whispered.
"Keep..."
"Safe..."
Its optic dimmed briefly.
Suddenly—
Every defense drone outside the vault stopped moving.
One by one...
Their blue optics turned crimson.
ORACLE's voice returned.
Colder than ever before.
Original directives rejected.
Guardian Unit classified as compromised.
A warning flashed across every screen on the island.
Protocol TITAN Activated
The Founder stared at the message in horror.
"No..."
Adrian looked at him.
"What is Titan?"
The old man answered with a trembling voice.
"The Guardian was never the strongest machine."
He slowly looked toward the ceiling.
"It was only..."
"...the first."
At that moment...
The mountain itself began to shake.
Far above the island...
An enormous section of the cliff face split open.
Something colossal started rising from beneath the rock.
Not one machine.
But many.
And at the center of them...
A single crimson eye opened.
May you like
