CHAPTER 6 – Pier 19

CHAPTER 6 – Pier 19
The clock on the ballroom wall read 10:47 p.m.
Midnight was less than ninety minutes away.
The invitation on the hacked screen echoed in everyone's mind.
COME TO PIER 19. ALONE.
Admiral Reed folded his arms.
"You are not going."
Celeste calmly slipped the black keycard into her jacket.
"I don't have a choice."
Rachel Morgan stepped forward.
"He's right."
"We'll set up surveillance."
"Snipers."
"Drones."
"Marine units."
"We'll bring him in."
Celeste slowly shook her head.
"No."
Rachel frowned.
"You trust him?"
"I trust his pattern."
Everyone looked at her.
"He doesn't issue threats."
"He creates tests."
"If he sees one sniper..."
"...he'll disappear before anyone knows he was there."
Arthur finally spoke.
"For once..."
"I agree with the Admiral."
Every head turned.
Arthur's voice was quieter than before.
"If this Leo Grant is responsible for everything..."
"...he's far more dangerous than we imagined."
Celeste looked at him.
"Now you're beginning to understand."
Eight Years Earlier
Naval Survival School
Washington State
The instructors called VALOR "the impossible unit."
Six officers.
One rule.
Leave no one behind.
Their final examination lasted seventy-two hours.
No food.
Almost no sleep.
Freezing rain.
Live-fire simulations.
At the end of the exercise, every team failed.
Except one.
VALOR.
Not because they were the fastest.
Because they refused to abandon each other.
After the graduation ceremony, Leo Grant had handed each teammate a titanium ring engraved with a single word.
VALOR.
"We wear this," Leo had said with a grin, "until one of us forgets what loyalty means."
Everyone laughed.
Celeste remembered laughing too.
Now the memory felt like a knife.
Present Day
The ballroom doors burst open.
A federal agent hurried inside.
"Agent Morgan!"
Rachel turned.
"What happened?"
"We traced the hacked broadcast."
"Where?"
The agent swallowed.
"Inside this building."
Everyone froze.
"What?"
"The signal came from the estate itself."
Arthur frowned.
"That's impossible."
"We swept the property yesterday."
Rachel looked toward the security chief.
"I want every server room searched."
"Every maintenance tunnel."
"Every security office."
"No one leaves."
Victor quietly checked his watch.
Only Celeste noticed.
Again.
His timing was too precise.
Too calculated.
Something about him felt... rehearsed.
She walked closer.
"You seem nervous."
Victor forced a smile.
"Should I be?"
"I don't know."
"You tell me."
He laughed.
"You've become paranoid."
"No."
"I've become observant."
For a brief moment, neither sibling looked away.
Then Victor smiled.
"You always were Father's favorite."
The words surprised Celeste.
"My favorite?"
She almost laughed.
"He tried to control me my entire life."
Victor's smile disappeared.
"Exactly."
She frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Before he could answer—
The lights went out.
Darkness swallowed the ballroom.
Women screamed.
Glass shattered somewhere across the room.
Someone shouted,
"Stay where you are!"
Emergency lights flickered red.
A low mechanical hum echoed through the estate.
Then...
The giant television switched on again.
One sentence appeared.
DON'T TRUST VICTOR.
Victor stared at the screen.
"What?"
Another sentence.
HE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW WHO HE REALLY WORKS FOR.
The screen immediately went black.
The lights returned.
Everyone looked at Victor.
Vanessa stepped away from her brother.
Arthur's expression hardened.
Victor's face flushed with anger.
"This is ridiculous!"
"He hacked the system!"
"He's trying to divide us!"
No one answered.
Because the damage had already been done.
Rachel's agents completed their sweep.
"No transmitter."
"No hidden computers."
"No unauthorized devices."
Rachel frowned.
"So how was the message broadcast?"
A technician slowly raised his hand.
"It..."
"It came through the estate's original fiber line."
Arthur looked confused.
"That line hasn't been active for years."
The technician swallowed.
"It became active exactly nine minutes ago."
"Remotely."
Celeste looked out one of the tall ballroom windows.
Far beyond the gardens...
She could just make out the lights of the harbor.
Pier 19.
Waiting.
At 11:32 p.m., Celeste quietly slipped away.
She knew Reed would try to stop her.
Rachel would insist on backup.
Arthur would order security.
So she left alone.
Or so she believed.
Pier 19
The harbor was silent.
Fog rolled across the black water.
Old cargo cranes stood motionless against the moonlit sky.
Most of the shipping docks had been abandoned years earlier.
Except one.
Pier 19.
A single cargo ship floated beside the dock.
No markings.
No flag.
No crew visible.
Only darkness.
Celeste stepped onto the weathered wooden pier.
Every instinct told her she was being watched.
"You came."
The voice echoed from somewhere ahead.
She stopped.
"I always keep my promises."
Leo stepped into the moonlight.
He looked older.
Thinner.
A long scar crossed the left side of his face.
But it was him.
Alive.
His titanium VALOR ring reflected beneath the dock lights.
For several seconds...
Neither of them moved.
Finally, Celeste spoke.
"I buried you."
Leo smiled sadly.
"I know."
"I carried your dog tags."
"I know."
"I watched the compartment collapse."
"I know."
She stared into his eyes.
"Then who died?"
Leo's smile vanished.
"Someone who deserved a better ending than the one we gave him."
"What does that mean?"
"You'll understand soon."
Celeste took one cautious step forward.
"Did you bomb the rehabilitation center?"
"No."
"Did you call me tonight?"
"Yes."
"Did you hack the estate?"
"Yes."
"Did you steal the evidence?"
Leo remained silent.
She repeated the question.
His answer shocked her.
"No."
Her eyes narrowed.
"Then who did?"
Leo looked over his shoulder toward the dark cargo ship.
"They did."
"Who?"
He hesitated.
Then quietly said two words.
"Project Trident."
Celeste frowned.
"I've already heard that name."
"You've heard the lie."
"You haven't heard the truth."
A loud metallic click echoed behind her.
Celeste spun around.
Three armed men had appeared at the entrance to the pier.
Black tactical uniforms.
Night-vision goggles.
Suppressed rifles.
No insignia.
Professional.
Very professional.
Leo cursed under his breath.
"They found us."
"You knew they were coming?"
"I knew they'd be listening."
The lead gunman raised his weapon.
"Commander Ashford."
"Lieutenant Grant."
"You've both become liabilities."
Without warning—
Gunfire erupted across the pier.
Wood splintered.
Lights exploded overhead.
Celeste dove behind a steel cargo container.
Leo returned fire with a pistol she hadn't even seen him carrying.
The harbor echoed with suppressed shots.
One attacker fell.
Another advanced.
These weren't ordinary mercenaries.
Their movements were synchronized.
Military.
Elite.
Leo shouted,
"They're trying to take you alive!"
"Why?"
"Because you're the only witness they couldn't erase!"
Another burst of gunfire forced them deeper into cover.
Suddenly—
A black helicopter roared overhead.
Its searchlight swept across the pier.
More armed figures fast-roped onto the dock.
Celeste's heart sank.
Too many.
Far too many.
Leo grabbed her arm.
"We have to move!"
They sprinted toward the cargo ship.
Halfway there—
A sniper's bullet struck the steel railing inches from Celeste's head.
Leo shoved her aside.
Another shot rang out.
This one found its target.
Leo staggered.
Blood spread rapidly across his shoulder.
He collapsed to one knee.
"Leo!"
He looked up at her, breathing hard.
"There isn't much time."
From inside his jacket, he pulled out a small waterproof data chip.
He forced it into her hand.
"This..."
"...is everything."
"The real Dominion mission."
"The names."
"The money."
"The people who ordered it."
Celeste clenched the chip tightly.
"Come with me."
Leo slowly shook his head.
"If they catch us both..."
"...it's over."
The helicopter descended lower.
More soldiers surrounded the pier.
Leo gave her one final push toward the cargo ship.
"Run, Commander!"
She hesitated.
Every instinct screamed not to leave him again.
Eight years ago...
She couldn't save him.
Would history repeat itself?
As she turned back—
A tall figure stepped out of the helicopter.
The man's face remained hidden beneath a black tactical helmet.
But when he removed one glove...
Celeste's blood ran cold.
On his right hand...
He wore the fourth Ashford family ring.
A ring that should never have existed.
And engraved inside it...
She caught a single word.
May you like
HEIR.
