CHAPTER 18 – The Hidden Founder

CHAPTER 18 – The Hidden Founder
The chamber plunged into darkness.
Only the glowing access panel remained illuminated.
Its color had changed from red...
...to emerald green.
Everyone stared.
ORACLE spoke again.
Founder authorization accepted.
Arthur's voice erupted over the radio.
"I didn't do anything!"
Celeste looked at the panel.
"If it wasn't you..."
"...who activated it?"
The platform trembled.
Deep beneath the chamber, ancient gears awakened.
A low rumble echoed through the mountain.
The four bridges slowly rotated until they formed a single path leading toward a massive circular vault.
Above the entrance, words appeared that no one had noticed before.
FOUNDERS' CHAMBER
The Founder himself looked stunned.
"I've never seen this room."
Adrian frowned.
"How is that possible?"
The old man answered quietly.
"Because I never built it."
The vault door opened only a few inches.
Just enough for a person to squeeze through.
A cold wind drifted from the darkness beyond.
ORACLE spoke.
Founder access confirmed.
One individual may enter.
Leo stepped toward the entrance.
The door immediately stopped moving.
Access denied.
Lyra tried next.
Again—
Access denied.
Celeste stepped closer.
The scanner flashed.
Identity recognized.
The door opened another foot.
The Founder whispered,
"It wants you."
Celeste looked back at the others.
"I'm not going in alone."
ORACLE immediately replied.
Only one Founder Candidate may enter the chamber.
Before anyone could argue—
Metallic footsteps echoed behind them.
The defense drones had arrived.
Dozens of them.
Captain Elias Ward and the remaining guards formed a line across the bridge.
Ward looked at Celeste.
"Go."
"We'll hold them."
Celeste shook her head.
"You've already done enough."
Ward smiled.
"Then let us finish what we started."
The battle exploded.
Stun rounds streaked across the chamber.
Sparks flew from the steel walls.
The guards pushed forward while Leo covered the civilians.
Ava and Dr. Brooks hurried the rescued prisoners toward a reinforced shelter beneath the platform.
Celeste looked at Lyra.
"I'll come back."
Lyra smiled for the first time.
"You'd better."
The sisters embraced briefly.
Twenty-eight years apart.
One moment together.
Then Celeste slipped through the narrow opening.
The vault door closed behind her.
Silence.
The chamber on the other side was unlike anything she expected.
No computers.
No weapons.
No giant servers.
Instead...
It resembled an old library.
Thousands of books lined towering shelves.
Maps covered the walls.
In the center stood a single wooden desk.
On it rested a leather journal.
Its cover bore a simple inscription.
THE FIRST LOG
Celeste slowly opened it.
The handwriting was elegant.
The first page read:
If you are reading this, then ORACLE has exceeded its purpose.
She turned another page.
There was only one sentence.
Never trust the final memory.
Celeste frowned.
"What does that mean?"
A soft voice answered behind her.
"It means history can be rewritten."
Celeste spun around.
An elderly woman stepped from the shadows.
She wore simple gray clothing.
No weapons.
No insignia.
Silver hair framed a calm but weary face.
"You..."
Celeste whispered.
"Who are you?"
The woman smiled gently.
"My name is Eleanor."
"I helped build the first Trident."
Outside the vault, the battle intensified.
Leo fired another stun round, forcing two drones backward.
Captain Ward shouted,
"They just keep coming!"
Adrian searched desperately for another control panel.
"There has to be a manual override!"
The Founder answered,
"There isn't."
Inside the chamber, Eleanor slowly approached the desk.
"I've waited many years for someone to reach this room."
Celeste looked at her carefully.
"Were you hiding?"
"No."
"I was protecting something."
She placed a small brass key beside the journal.
"What is it?"
"The true Core."
Celeste frowned.
"I thought ORACLE was the Core."
Eleanor shook her head.
"ORACLE is only the caretaker."
"This key unlocks what created it."
Celeste picked up the key.
It felt surprisingly warm.
"What happens if I use it?"
Eleanor's smile faded.
"You'll learn the truth."
"And if I don't?"
"Then ORACLE will decide the future for everyone."
Suddenly—
The journal flipped open by itself.
Its final page contained a photograph.
Celeste's heart stopped.
It showed two newborn babies.
One labeled:
CELESTE
The other:
LYRA
Standing behind the hospital bed...
Smiling proudly...
Was Arthur Ashford.
But beside him stood someone else.
A woman Celeste had never seen before.
Eleanor looked at the photograph.
Then quietly said,
"That woman wasn't your mother."
Silence filled the chamber.
Celeste slowly looked up.
"What did you say?"
Eleanor met her eyes.
"The story you've believed about your birth..."
"...is incomplete."
At that exact moment, the vault door behind Celeste shook violently.
Something enormous had reached the other side.
Not a drone.
Not a guard.
A single metallic fist struck the steel.
The entire chamber trembled.
ORACLE's voice echoed through the room.
Guardian Unit awakened.
Final containment protocol initiated.
Eleanor's expression changed for the first time.
Fear.
She whispered,
"It found us..."
The vault door began to bend inward.
