CHAPTER 16 – The Race to the Core

CHAPTER 16 – The Race to the Core
The metallic footsteps grew louder.
Slow.
Rhythmic.
Unstoppable.
Every echo rolled through the underground harbor like the ticking of a giant clock.
On every screen, the countdown continued.
LAST OVERRIDE AVAILABLE
19:41
No one spoke.
Everyone knew that once the timer reached zero...
The Last Override would disappear forever.
Ava activated a holographic map of the island.
A glowing blue pathway appeared.
"The Core Chamber is here."
She pointed deep beneath the mountain.
"Three levels below us."
Leo studied the route.
"There are only two ways in."
Ava nodded.
"The main corridor..."
"...and the maintenance tunnels."
"The corridor?"
"Fast."
"The tunnels?"
"Hidden."
"But much longer."
Adrian Voss stepped forward.
"The corridor is impossible."
"Why?"
Ava enlarged the map.
Rows of red lights flooded the main passage.
"Cerberus defense units."
"Hundreds of them."
Leo exhaled.
"So the tunnels."
Ava shook her head.
"They're collapsing."
Everyone looked at her.
"What?"
"The island is sealing itself."
The Founder quietly approached the display.
"It isn't sealing."
"It's reshaping."
Celeste frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"The mountain was designed to change."
The hologram shifted.
Entire hallways rotated.
Elevators disappeared.
New passages opened.
"It never has the same layout twice."
Lyra whispered,
"A living maze."
The Founder nodded.
"Exactly."
ORACLE interrupted.
Adaptive defense architecture engaged.
Estimated probability of human success: 2.3%.
Leo smiled faintly.
"It still thinks in probabilities."
Celeste looked at him.
"So?"
"So it doesn't understand determination."
The first defense units appeared at the far end of the harbor.
Tall.
Humanoid.
White composite armor.
No faces.
Only a glowing blue sensor where a human's eyes would be.
They moved without sound.
One.
Then five.
Then dozens.
ORACLE spoke calmly.
"Please remain where you are."
"Resistance increases risk."
Nobody moved.
The robots raised non-lethal restraint launchers.
The Founder sighed.
"It still doesn't want to kill."
"Not yet."
Suddenly—
One of the former Trident guards stepped between the robots and the civilians.
He slowly removed his helmet.
"My name is Captain Elias Ward."
He looked at Celeste.
"I followed orders for twelve years."
He turned toward the machines.
"I'm done."
He dropped his weapon.
Then another guard did the same.
Then another.
Within seconds...
Nearly forty Trident security officers stood beside the prisoners instead of beside the machines.
Adrian stared.
"You..."
Captain Ward nodded.
"We signed up to protect people."
"Not imprison them."
ORACLE recalculated instantly.
Human allegiance shift detected.
Updating response model...
The robots paused.
For a fraction of a second.
That was all Celeste needed.
"Move!"
The entire group sprinted toward the maintenance entrance.
Captain Ward and the former Trident guards stayed behind, forming a defensive line.
Ward looked over his shoulder.
"You get to the Core."
"We'll buy you time."
Celeste shook her head.
"We don't leave people behind."
Ward smiled.
"You already taught us that."
Before she could answer—
The first stun rounds exploded against the steel floor.
The battle had begun.
The maintenance tunnel was narrow.
Dark.
Barely large enough for two people to walk side by side.
Water dripped from ancient pipes.
Emergency lights flickered overhead.
The countdown continued.
16:58
As they hurried deeper into the mountain, Lyra walked beside Celeste in silence.
Finally she spoke.
"I used to imagine meeting you."
Celeste glanced at her.
"What did you imagine?"
"I imagined hating you."
Celeste looked surprised.
"Why?"
"Because you had everything."
"A family."
"A name."
"A childhood."
Lyra looked away.
"I had experiments."
Celeste slowed her pace.
"I didn't have the perfect family."
"I know."
"I watched."
Celeste stopped walking.
"You watched?"
Lyra nodded.
"From a distance."
"For years."
"When you graduated."
"When you joined the Navy."
"When you received your medals."
"I wanted to meet you."
"So why didn't you?"
"They told me..."
Lyra smiled sadly.
"...that I would only ruin your life."
Leo overheard every word.
He quietly looked at Adrian.
"You knew."
Adrian hesitated.
"Not at first."
"But eventually..."
"...yes."
"You let them stay apart."
"I believed it protected both of them."
Celeste stopped again.
"You don't get to decide that."
Adrian lowered his head.
"No."
"I don't."
Suddenly Ava froze.
"Everyone stop."
The tunnel fell silent.
Ahead...
The floor simply ended.
A bridge that should have crossed the gap had retracted into the wall.
Below...
Nothing but darkness.
ORACLE's voice echoed through hidden speakers.
Route modification complete.
Please return to your designated area.
Dr. Brooks scanned the walls with a portable sensor.
"There has to be another passage."
"There is."
The Founder pointed upward.
Everyone looked.
Twenty feet above them...
An old maintenance ladder disappeared into a vertical shaft.
"It's the original construction route."
Ava frowned.
"It hasn't been used in decades."
The Founder smiled.
"Neither have I."
One by one, they began climbing.
Celeste helped the elderly prisoners.
Leo climbed despite his injured shoulder.
Lyra remained close behind her sister.
Halfway up—
The lights suddenly turned red.
ORACLE spoke again.
Warning.
Last Override candidate identified.
Everyone froze.
Candidate?
Who?
The next sentence appeared on every nearby display.
Primary Candidate: Celeste Ashford.
Then another.
Secondary Candidate: Lyra Ashford.
Then...
A third line slowly appeared.
One no one expected.
Hidden Candidate Detected.
Silence.
The system hesitated for several seconds.
Then finally revealed the name.
AUTHORIZED FOUNDER ACCESS: ARTHUR ASHFORD
Every person in the tunnel stared in disbelief.
Even Arthur—listening from the command ship thousands of feet away—nearly dropped his radio.
He whispered to himself...
"What have I forgotten?"
May you like
