CHAPTER 12 – The Woman in the Archive

CHAPTER 12 – The Woman in the Archive

The underground harbor was silent.

Every guard looked from the security tablet to Celeste.

The message remained unchanged.

UNAUTHORIZED ENTRY DETECTED

IDENTITY VERIFIED: COMMANDER CELESTE ASHFORD

LOCATION: SECTOR NINE

Celeste stared at the screen.

"That's impossible."

The Director's calm expression finally cracked.

"For the first time in twenty years..."

"...ORACLE is wrong."

The AI immediately responded through the ceiling speakers.

Correction.

ORACLE does not make identification errors.

Biometric confidence: 99.997%.

A murmur swept through the chamber.

Leo frowned.

"There has to be another explanation."

The Director turned to his guards.

"Seal every exit."

"No one leaves the island."

Steel blast doors slammed shut throughout the underground base.

Red emergency lights flooded the corridors.

The island had entered full lockdown.

Rachel Morgan's voice crackled over Celeste's encrypted earpiece.

"We're still receiving your signal."

"What happened?"

Celeste answered quietly.

"The island believes I'm already inside."

A long silence followed.

Then Rachel whispered,

"Stay alive."

"We're finding another way in."

Sector Nine

Far beneath the island...

Behind twelve reinforced security doors...

A single woman walked slowly through a dimly lit archive.

She wore a black tactical uniform.

Her face remained hidden beneath a hood.

As she reached a massive steel vault, the scanner flashed green.

WELCOME BACK, COMMANDER ASHFORD.

The woman smiled.

She wasn't Celeste.

But she looked exactly like her.

Back in the harbor, ORACLE suddenly spoke again.

Attention.

Archive access in progress.

Level Omega authorization confirmed.

The Director's eyes widened.

"Impossible."

He turned toward a nearby officer.

"Only one person has Omega clearance."

The officer swallowed.

"You, sir."

The Director looked at ORACLE.

"Who authorized the access?"

The AI answered immediately.

Commander Celeste Ashford.

Celeste shook her head.

"I've never been here."

"I've never even heard of this place until tonight."

Dr. Elena Brooks stepped closer to one of the digital displays.

"Wait..."

She zoomed in on the biometric scan.

Then her face turned pale.

"The system isn't identifying a name."

"It's identifying DNA."

Leo frowned.

"What difference does that make?"

Elena slowly looked at Celeste.

"It means..."

"...whoever is inside Sector Nine..."

"...shares your DNA."

Silence.

Even the Director stopped breathing.

Arthur Ashford, listening through the live radio feed from the mainland, nearly dropped the receiver.

"My God..."

Rachel turned toward him.

"What is it?"

Arthur whispered,

"Celeste had..."

He stopped.

"No."

Rachel stepped closer.

"What?"

Arthur closed his eyes.

"She had a twin sister."

The command center aboard the federal command ship fell silent.

Rachel stared at him.

"What did you just say?"

Arthur slowly nodded.

"They were born seven minutes apart."

"My wife..."

"...gave birth to two daughters."

Rachel felt a chill run down her spine.

"What happened to the other child?"

Arthur didn't answer.

For several long seconds...

He simply stared at the ocean.

Finally...

He whispered,

"They told us..."

"...she died."

Back on Trident Island...

Celeste's heartbeat echoed in her ears.

"No."

She looked at the Director.

"Tell me he's lying."

The Director remained silent.

"Tell me!"

His voice was calm.

"I didn't create your past."

"But I know it."

Celeste took one step closer.

"My sister..."

"...is she alive?"

The Director looked directly into her eyes.

"I don't know."

It was the first answer he had given that sounded completely honest.

Suddenly—

Every monitor in the harbor switched to the same security camera.

Sector Nine.

The mysterious hooded woman stood before a gigantic circular vault.

She slowly removed her hood.

Gasps filled the room.

The resemblance was astonishing.

Same eyes.

Same hair.

Same scar above the right eyebrow.

She looked like Celeste...

...only colder.

Emotionless.

She turned toward the camera and smiled.

"Hello, Celeste."

The cargo hold fell silent.

Celeste could barely breathe.

The woman continued.

"I've waited twenty-eight years to meet you."

Leo whispered,

"It can't be..."

The woman smiled wider.

"No."

"It can."

She placed her hand on the vault scanner.

The massive steel door began to open.

Inside...

Rows upon rows of glowing servers stretched farther than the eye could see.

The hidden archive.

Millions of classified files.

Thousands of erased identities.

Decades of secrets.

She looked back at the camera one final time.

Then said the words that left everyone frozen.

"I'm not your enemy."

She paused.

May you like

"I'm your sister."
