CHAPTER 4 – The Ghost from the Deep

CHAPTER 4 – The Ghost from the Deep

No one spoke.

The frozen security footage glowed on the ballroom's massive screen.

A single image.

A silver Ashford family ring.

A titanium VALOR ring.

Two symbols that should never have appeared together.

Celeste's heartbeat slowed instead of racing.

Years of military training had taught her one lesson above all else:

When everyone else panics...

Think.

She stepped closer to the screen.

"Zoom in."

A technician obeyed.

The grainy footage sharpened just enough to reveal the man's posture.

His left shoulder dipped slightly.

His right foot pointed outward when he walked.

He favored his left knee.

Tiny details.

Meaningless to everyone else.

Not to Celeste.

She whispered almost to herself.

"No..."

Admiral Reed heard her.

"You recognize him."

She didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she closed her eyes.

The sound of the ballroom disappeared.

She was somewhere else.

Eight Years Earlier

USS Dominion

South China Sea

2337 Hours

The destroyer shook violently.

Emergency alarms screamed through every deck.

Smoke poured into the engineering compartments.

"Bulkhead Nine is collapsing!"

"Flooding on Deck Three!"

"We've lost internal communications!"

Twenty-four sailors were trapped below.

Commander Celeste Ashford sprinted toward the engine room with six members of the emergency rescue team.

Lieutenant Daniel Cross.

Chief Mason Ortiz.

Engineer Ava Kim.

Medic Ethan Blake.

Diver Noah Pierce.

Technician Leo Grant.

The elite damage-control unit known only by its callsign:

VALOR.

They had trained together for years.

Lived together.

Nearly died together.

Trust wasn't optional.

It was survival.

The explosion that followed split the corridor in half.

Steel screamed.

Fire erupted through broken pipes.

The escape route disappeared.

Twenty-three sailors made it through.

One remained behind.

Leo Grant.

He had been pinned beneath twisted steel.

Celeste tried to reach him.

Daniel grabbed her arm.

"The deck is giving way!"

"We have to go!"

"I'm not leaving him!"

"You'll die!"

She looked at Leo.

He smiled weakly.

"Commander..."

"...save the others."

Seconds later...

The compartment collapsed.

The ocean swallowed everything.

Leo Grant was declared dead.

His body was never recovered.

Present Day

Celeste opened her eyes.

"No."

Rachel Morgan frowned.

"No what?"

"The man on that screen..."

"...can't be Leo."

Admiral Reed's expression darkened.

"You think he's alive."

"I watched him die."

"But..."

She looked at the frozen image again.

"He walks exactly like Leo."

The room became silent once more.

Arthur listened carefully.

For the first time all evening...

This conversation had nothing to do with him.

Rachel stepped forward.

"We investigated every surviving member of VALOR."

She opened another file.

"Commander Celeste Ashford."

"Retired."

"Chief Mason Ortiz."

"Currently serving."

"Engineer Ava Kim."

"Naval Research Division."

"Medic Ethan Blake."

"Civilian trauma surgeon."

"Diver Noah Pierce."

"Missing during classified operations two years ago."

She paused.

"And..."

"Lieutenant Leo Grant."

"Killed in action."

She looked at Celeste.

"Officially."

Celeste slowly repeated the last word.

"Officially."

Victor suddenly interrupted.

"This is absurd."

"You expect everyone to believe a dead Navy officer is somehow working with our family?"

Celeste turned toward him.

"I didn't say that."

"Then what are you saying?"

She stared directly into his eyes.

"I'm saying someone wants us to believe that."

Victor looked away first.

A tiny movement.

Barely noticeable.

But Celeste caught it.

Admiral Reed crossed his arms.

"If Leo survived..."

"...someone buried the truth."

Rachel nodded.

"And if someone buried his death..."

"...they also erased every record afterward."

She looked at Arthur.

"Your company specializes in international military shipping."

Arthur frowned.

"So?"

"So your company transported classified cargo during the Dominion rescue mission."

Arthur's face stiffened.

"I don't remember every shipment."

"No."

Rachel answered.

"But your archives do."

At that exact moment—

One of Arthur's senior executives quietly slipped toward a side exit.

Celeste noticed.

"So did Admiral Reed."

"Stop him."

Two Navy officers moved instantly.

The executive broke into a run.

Guests screamed as tables crashed to the floor.

He shoved past waiters.

Knocked over a violinist.

Reached the hallway.

Almost escaped.

Then—

A Navy petty officer tackled him to the marble floor.

The man's briefcase burst open.

Hundreds of documents scattered across the hallway.

Rachel Morgan knelt beside them.

Her eyes widened.

"What..."

Inside were shipping manifests.

Satellite photos.

Payment records.

And one document stamped:

PROJECT TRIDENT

Every page carried the same warning.

TOP SECRET

Arthur stared at the papers.

"I've never seen those."

The executive shouted from the floor.

"Don't listen to him!"

"He ordered everything!"

Arthur snapped back.

"You're lying!"

"I followed your instructions!"

"I never approved this!"

Guests watched the billionaire and his executive accuse each other in front of television cameras.

The perfect Ashford empire was cracking apart.

Rachel picked up one file.

Her expression turned grave.

"Commander..."

"You need to see this."

Celeste walked over.

Inside the folder...

Was her own military service record.

Except...

Someone had altered it.

Entire missions had disappeared.

Commendations had been erased.

Medical reports replaced.

Even the date of the Dominion disaster had been changed.

She whispered,

"They rewrote my life."

Rachel slowly nodded.

"And not just yours."

There were six personnel files.

Every member of VALOR.

Every record had been modified.

Some pages had been removed entirely.

Others had been replaced with obvious fabrications.

Someone had systematically erased the unit's true history.

Admiral Reed's jaw tightened.

"I never authorized this."

Rachel looked at him.

"Which means someone above your clearance did."

The Admiral fell silent.

There were very few people above his clearance.

Too few.

Suddenly—

Celeste's phone vibrated.

She frowned.

Almost no one had the number.

The screen displayed:

UNKNOWN CALLER

She answered.

"Commander Ashford."

No response.

Only slow breathing.

Then...

A familiar voice.

A voice she hadn't heard in eight years.

Soft.

Calm.

Almost amused.

"You still notice everything."

Celeste's blood froze.

She knew that voice.

Impossible.

The caller continued.

"You always could recognize the way I walked."

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

The ballroom disappeared around her.

"Leo?"

A quiet chuckle came through the speaker.

"Not bad."

"I wondered how long it would take."

Celeste could barely breathe.

"You're dead."

"So is the woman you used to be."

Silence.

Then his voice grew colder.

"You should have left the past at the bottom of the sea."

Click.

The line went dead.

Celeste stared at the phone.

Admiral Reed stepped forward immediately.

"Who was it?"

She looked up slowly.

Every eye in the ballroom was fixed on her.

Her answer sent a chill through the room.

"It was Leo."

She swallowed hard.

"And he wants me to stop looking."

But what frightened her most...

Wasn't that Leo Grant was alive.

It was the final sound she had heard just before he hung up.

Not the ocean.

Not traffic.

Not voices.

A ship's foghorn.

Long.

Deep.

Identical...

To the one used by Ashford Maritime's private fleet.

Somewhere...

Very close.

Someone who should have been dead...

May you like

Was hiding inside her father's empire.
