CHAPTER 17 – The Forgotten Key

CHAPTER 17 – The Forgotten Key

The maintenance shaft fell completely silent.

Only the distant hum of the island's machinery could be heard.

The glowing words remained suspended on the nearby display.

AUTHORIZED FOUNDER ACCESS: ARTHUR ASHFORD

No one moved.

Arthur Ashford's voice finally came through Celeste's radio.

"There has to be a mistake."

The Founder slowly shook his head.

"ORACLE doesn't invent founder credentials."

Arthur's breathing became uneven.

"I've never been to this island."

The Founder looked at him through the camera.

"No."

"But someone came here using your authorization."

Celeste frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Dr. Elena Brooks answered first.

"If Arthur's credentials were copied decades ago..."

"...the system may still believe they're valid."

Arthur closed his eyes.

"Copied..."

Then a memory surfaced.

One he had buried beneath years of board meetings and billion-dollar deals.

Twenty-Eight Years Earlier

Arthur Ashford sat inside a private research laboratory.

His shipping company had just signed a contract to develop secure autonomous logistics software.

A young engineer greeted him.

"We only need a biometric scan."

"It will activate your founder profile."

Arthur barely paid attention.

He placed his hand on the scanner.

Signed several documents.

Left within an hour.

He never asked another question.

He assumed it was another corporate contract.

Present Day

Arthur's face turned pale.

"My fingerprints..."

"My retinal scan..."

"My DNA..."

"They took everything."

The Founder nodded.

"They weren't building a shipping system."

"They were building trust."

Inside the maintenance shaft, Celeste looked toward Adrian.

"You knew this."

Adrian answered quietly.

"I discovered it years later."

"And you never told him?"

"I couldn't."

"You should have."

"I know."

ORACLE interrupted.

Unauthorized movement detected.

Defense units converging.

The walls vibrated.

Metallic footsteps echoed below the shaft.

The machines had found them.

Captain Elias Ward's voice suddenly came over a recovered radio channel.

"Commander!"

"We can't hold them much longer!"

Gunfire echoed behind his transmission.

"We'll buy you another three minutes!"

The signal died.

Celeste looked down the shaft.

"We keep moving."

They emerged into an enormous circular chamber.

Ancient steel beams stretched overhead.

At its center stood a single platform connected to four narrow bridges.

Each bridge led toward a different tunnel.

Ava studied the holographic map.

"This isn't right."

"The Core should be straight ahead."

The Founder smiled sadly.

"It moved again."

The platform suddenly lit up.

A calm synthetic voice filled the chamber.

Identity verification required.

A transparent panel rose from the floor.

Three glowing handprints appeared.

Each labeled with a name.

CELESTE ASHFORD

LYRA ASHFORD

ARTHUR ASHFORD

Leo frowned.

"It needs all three?"

Dr. Brooks examined the interface.

"No."

She pointed to a line of text beneath it.

Minimum Requirement: Two of Three

Everyone fell silent.

Arthur was hundreds of miles away.

Celeste and Lyra were here.

The choice seemed obvious.

Lyra stepped toward the panel.

"So this is why I was kept alive."

Celeste stood beside her.

"No."

"You were kept alive because someone chose cruelty."

Lyra looked at her sister and smiled faintly.

"You're still trying to save everyone."

"I always will."

The sisters placed their hands on the glowing prints.

The scanner pulsed.

A pleasant chime echoed.

Then—

The display flashed red.

ACCESS DENIED

Everyone stared.

"What?"

Ava quickly checked the diagnostics.

"The DNA matches."

"The biometrics match."

"So why didn't it open?"

The Founder looked troubled.

"It wants something else."

ORACLE answered immediately.

Emotional authentication failed.

Silence.

Leo blinked.

"What does that even mean?"

The AI responded.

Founder Protocol requires mutual trust between authorized users.

The sisters slowly looked at one another.

Years apart.

Different lives.

Different memories.

Connected by blood.

Separated by experience.

Lyra quietly removed her hand.

"It won't work."

Celeste caught her wrist.

"Don't."

"You don't trust me."

"I don't know you."

"Exactly."

The Founder stepped forward.

"When I designed the earliest safeguards..."

"...I believed power should never belong to one person."

"So I required cooperation."

He looked at both sisters.

"Not perfect agreement."

"Trust."

Suddenly, explosions echoed through the tunnels behind them.

Captain Ward and the remaining guards burst into the chamber.

Several were injured.

Ward was bleeding from his shoulder.

"They're right behind us!"

As if on cue...

The first defense drones entered the tunnel.

Their blue sensors shifted instantly toward the group.

ORACLE spoke.

Final warning.

Return to designated containment areas.

No one moved.

The drones advanced.

Leo raised his weapon.

"We're out of time."

Ward and the surviving guards formed another defensive line.

Ava desperately searched the console.

"There has to be another way!"

Dr. Brooks suddenly froze.

"Wait..."

She zoomed into the original source code displayed beneath the authentication panel.

A tiny comment remained hidden inside thousands of lines of programming.

The Founder leaned closer.

His eyes widened.

"I don't remember writing that."

Brooks slowly read the sentence aloud.

Trust may also be inherited.

The chamber fell silent.

"What does that mean?" Celeste asked.

Brooks turned toward the radio clipped to Celeste's shoulder.

Then toward the glowing panel.

Finally...

She looked at Arthur.

"Mr. Ashford..."

"I think the system doesn't need your body."

"It needs your choice."

Arthur stared silently across the ocean.

For nearly three decades he had made decisions driven by profit, pride, and ambition.

Now...

One decision might determine whether his daughters lived or died.

He slowly reached toward the secure communication console aboard the command ship.

"Tell me what I have to do."

Before anyone could answer—

Every light in the chamber went dark.

Only ORACLE's voice remained.

Calm.

Unwavering.

Correction.

Founder Arthur Ashford has already made his choice.

The panel suddenly turned green.

Not because Arthur had touched it.

But because someone else...

Already had.

May you like
