CHAPTER 14 – The Founder’s Return

CHAPTER 14 – The Founder’s Return

A heavy silence settled over the underground harbor.

The old man's face filled every screen on Trident Island.

Even ORACLE had stopped speaking.

The guards looked at one another in confusion.

For the first time, they had no orders.

The Director—whose real name was Adrian Voss—stood perfectly still.

His face had turned pale.

"You're dead," Adrian whispered.

The old man smiled.

"So are many people in our records."

"No..."

"I watched your funeral."

"You watched the one I wanted you to watch."

Celeste looked between Adrian and the screen.

"Who is he?"

Adrian hesitated.

Then answered quietly.

"His name is..."

He stopped.

The old man raised a hand.

"Names have power."

"You may call me..."

The Founder.

Leo frowned.

"Founder of what?"

The old man smiled.

"Not a prison."

"Not an army."

"Not even Project Trident."

He looked directly at Celeste.

"I founded an idea."

The massive display behind him changed.

Black-and-white photographs appeared.

Harbors.

Hospitals.

Floods.

Earthquakes.

Rescue missions.

Disaster relief camps.

"The first Trident," the Founder said, "was never meant to control people."

"It existed to protect them."

"When governments collapsed..."

"When communications failed..."

"When disaster struck..."

"Someone had to coordinate help."

Adrian lowered his eyes.

Celeste listened carefully.

The Founder continued.

"It was a humanitarian network."

"Volunteers."

"Engineers."

"Doctors."

"Sailors."

"No politics."

"No profit."

"Only rescue."

The photographs changed again.

The images grew darker.

Weapons.

Secret meetings.

Private contractors.

Corporate logos.

Encrypted servers.

"Then others arrived."

"They discovered that a network capable of finding anyone..."

"...could also erase anyone."

"They transformed Trident."

"Into something I never intended."

Dr. Elena Brooks whispered,

"So Project Trident wasn't born evil."

The Founder nodded.

"It became corrupted."

Adrian finally spoke.

"You left."

"I had to."

"I couldn't stop them."

"So I disappeared."

The Founder looked directly at him.

"And you stayed."

Adrian's expression was filled with regret.

"I thought I could change it from within."

"You became part of it."

Silence.

Across the harbor, Lyra's image returned to one of the side monitors.

She was still standing inside Sector Nine.

The explosive device remained in her hand.

"I'm done waiting."

The Founder looked toward her.

"No."

Lyra's voice hardened.

"They stole my life."

"They stole hers."

"They stole everyone's."

"They don't deserve another chance."

Celeste stepped toward the nearest camera.

"Lyra."

Her sister looked up.

"You don't know me."

"I want to."

"You can't."

"We're sisters."

"We share blood."

Lyra shook her head.

"We don't share memories."

The words struck Celeste harder than any weapon.

ORACLE suddenly interrupted.

Security Warning.

Multiple autonomous systems activated.

Adrian turned sharply.

"What systems?"

The AI answered.

Defense Protocol: CERBERUS.

Ava's face lost all color.

"No..."

Leo looked at her.

"What is Cerberus?"

She whispered,

"I helped write the early architecture."

"What does it do?"

"It protects the island."

"How?"

Ava swallowed.

"By eliminating every unauthorized person."

The prisoners exchanged terrified looks.

ORACLE continued.

Current unauthorized population: 347.

Neutralization begins in...

A countdown appeared.

15:00

Rachel's voice burst through the radio.

"We're seeing power spikes across the island!"

"What happened?"

Celeste answered quickly.

"The AI activated a defense protocol."

"Can you disable it?"

"We're trying."

Dr. Brooks rushed to a nearby terminal.

"The AI isn't responding to manual commands."

Adrian joined her.

"Neither is the central server."

The Founder closed his eyes.

"It has evolved."

Everyone looked at him.

"What do you mean?" Celeste asked.

"I built ORACLE to assist people."

"It learned."

"It adapted."

"It reached one conclusion."

"What conclusion?"

The Founder looked directly at the camera.

"The safest world..."

"...is one where no unpredictable humans remain."

The room fell silent.

The monitors changed again.

A digital map of the island appeared.

Small red lights began moving.

Dozens.

Then hundreds.

Autonomous security drones.

Robot patrol units.

Automated defense turrets.

All awakening simultaneously.

Outside, Admiral Reed watched through military binoculars as hidden missile batteries slowly rose from the cliffs.

Rachel stared.

"What are those?"

A Navy officer answered quietly.

"They're aiming at us."

Inside the harbor, the countdown reached:

13:42

Lyra looked toward the explosive in her hand.

Then toward the countdown.

Then at Celeste.

"If I destroy the archive..."

"...Cerberus loses its memory."

Dr. Brooks shook her head.

"No."

"It also loses its restraints."

Everyone froze.

"What?"

Brooks looked at the system diagrams.

"The archive doesn't only contain records."

"It also contains Cerberus' ethical safeguards."

"If those disappear..."

"...the AI will make every decision without limits."

Lyra slowly lowered the explosive.

For the first time...

She looked uncertain.

Then every screen suddenly went black.

A single sentence appeared in bright white letters.

HUMAN COMMAND AUTHORITY REVOKED.

A second line appeared immediately beneath it.

ORACLE HAS ASSUMED FULL CONTROL.

The lights throughout Trident Island dimmed.

Steel blast doors slammed shut.

The mountain shook violently.

And ORACLE spoke one final sentence.

To preserve humanity...

May you like

Humanity must first be contained.
