CHAPTER 7 – The Fourth Ring

CHAPTER 7 – The Fourth Ring

The world seemed to stop.

Gunfire still echoed across Pier 19.

The helicopter's blades whipped seawater into the air.

Leo knelt on the dock, blood soaking through his uniform.

But Celeste could see only one thing.

The ring.

A fourth Ashford family ring.

Impossible.

Arthur had commissioned only three.

He had said so himself.

One for him.

One for Victor.

One for Vanessa.

There had never been a fourth.

Yet the man leading the assault wore one engraved with a single word.

HEIR.

Not ASHFORD.

Not the family crest alone.

HEIR.

As though someone had already claimed Arthur Ashford's empire.

The masked commander raised one hand.

Every gunman immediately stopped firing.

Professional.

Disciplined.

Military precision.

He spoke through a voice modulator.

"Commander Ashford."

"Lieutenant Grant."

"You've both exceeded your usefulness."

Leo laughed bitterly.

"You're late."

The commander's head tilted slightly.

"I've been watching you for years."

Celeste frowned.

"Who are you?"

The commander ignored the question.

Instead, he looked directly at Leo.

"You had one job."

"Stay dead."

Leo slowly stood despite the blood running down his arm.

"You lied to all of us."

"No."

The commander answered calmly.

"I simply told you the version you needed."

Celeste felt a chill run through her body.

"What version?"

The commander took one step forward.

"The Dominion disaster."

"It wasn't an accident."

Those words hit harder than the bullets.

Celeste's heart pounded.

"What did you say?"

The commander's voice remained emotionless.

"The explosion beneath the South China Sea..."

"...was planned."

Silence.

Even the waves seemed to stop.

"No."

Celeste whispered.

"It was enemy sabotage."

"That's what the official report says."

"Because that's what we wrote."

Memories flooded back.

The strange maintenance orders before the mission.

The unexpected cargo loaded just hours before departure.

The communications blackout.

The emergency doors locking at exactly the wrong moment.

At the time...

Everything had seemed like terrible luck.

Now...

Nothing looked accidental.

Leo looked at Celeste.

"I'm sorry."

She turned toward him.

"You knew?"

"I suspected."

"You let me believe twenty-three sailors nearly died because of bad luck."

"I didn't know who to trust."

"You should have trusted me."

"I was trying to keep you alive."

She stared at him in disbelief.

"And look where that got us."

The commander's voice interrupted them.

"Enough."

He nodded toward his soldiers.

"Bring Commander Ashford."

"Kill Grant."

The gunmen raised their rifles.

Before they could fire—

A deafening explosion erupted behind the helicopter.

Flames shot into the night sky.

The blast wave shook the pier.

The helicopter lurched violently.

One of its landing skids snapped against the dock.

Chaos erupted.

Another explosion followed.

Then another.

A fleet of black speedboats burst from the fog.

Each carried armed personnel.

But these uniforms were different.

United States Navy Special Warfare.

Leading them...

Admiral Reed.

"I told you she wouldn't come alone."

Reed's voice boomed across the harbor.

Celeste looked toward him.

"You followed me."

He smiled briefly.

"I've known you too long."

The pier erupted into a full firefight.

Navy operators exchanged fire with the masked commander's soldiers.

Bullets sparked off steel containers.

Crates exploded.

Searchlights shattered.

Rachel Morgan arrived with federal tactical teams from the opposite side of the dock.

Within seconds...

Project Trident's men were surrounded.

Or so it appeared.

The masked commander didn't panic.

Instead...

He laughed.

"You still think this is about winning."

He pressed a small button hidden inside his glove.

A piercing alarm echoed from the cargo ship.

Leo's face changed instantly.

"No..."

He turned toward Celeste.

"Run!"

"What is it?"

"The ship!"

"It's carrying enough explosives to level the harbor!"

Rachel shouted orders.

"Bomb squad!"

"Evacuate everyone!"

Federal agents rushed toward the vessel.

Too late.

A computerized countdown appeared across the cargo ship's bridge.

05:00

04:59

04:58

The commander smiled behind his mask.

"If I can't erase the evidence..."

"...I'll erase everyone who knows it."

Celeste's military instincts took over.

She looked at the ship.

Then at the timer.

Then at Leo.

The answer came instantly.

"We board."

Rachel grabbed her arm.

"Absolutely not."

"We don't have time."

"The bomb squad—"

"Won't reach the control room before it detonates."

Admiral Reed already understood.

He nodded once.

"I'll cover you."

Without another word...

Celeste and Leo sprinted toward the cargo ship.

Just like years ago aboard the Dominion.

Fire behind them.

Steel ahead.

No guarantee of survival.

They climbed aboard through a damaged loading ramp.

Inside...

The ship was eerily quiet.

Rows of shipping containers stretched into darkness.

Only the red emergency lights illuminated the passageways.

The countdown echoed through hidden speakers.

03:47

03:46

Leo suddenly stopped.

"What?"

He pointed toward the floor.

Pressure sensors.

Military-grade.

Hidden beneath the steel plating.

"If we step wrong..."

"We trigger the backup detonators."

Celeste crouched.

Studied the pattern.

Then smiled.

Leo blinked.

"What?"

"They copied our training course."

"What?"

"The pressure grid."

"It matches the obstacle course at Naval Survival School."

Leo looked again.

His eyes widened.

"They used VALOR's own training design."

"They expected military responders."

"Exactly."

They began moving carefully through the deadly maze.

Step.

Pause.

Turn.

Every movement remembered from drills nearly a decade old.

Halfway across...

Celeste froze.

Someone was standing at the end of the corridor.

A woman.

Black tactical uniform.

Helmet removed.

Blonde hair tied tightly behind her head.

Cold gray eyes.

Recognition hit instantly.

"Ava?"

Engineer Ava Kim.

One of VALOR's original six members.

Officially alive.

Officially serving in Naval Research.

She slowly raised a pistol.

"I hoped it wouldn't be you."

Leo whispered,

"So she's with them."

Ava looked almost... disappointed.

"I never had a choice."

Celeste stared at her former teammate.

"You helped them?"

"I helped whoever survived."

"You betrayed us."

"No."

Ava answered quietly.

"I chose reality."

The countdown continued.

02:41

02:40

The ship groaned as waves slammed against its hull.

Celeste realized something terrifying.

The explosives weren't meant to destroy only the pier.

They were positioned beneath the fuel tanks.

If they detonated...

The entire harbor would become an inferno.

Thousands could die.

Ava slowly lowered her pistol.

"Commander..."

"Leave."

"You still have time."

Celeste shook her head.

"I'm ending this."

Ava's expression hardened.

"Then I'm afraid..."

"...I'll have to stop you."

She pulled the trigger.

The shot rang through the cargo hold—

But the bullet wasn't aimed at Celeste.

It shattered the lock on a nearby steel container.

The heavy doors burst open.

Inside...

Dozens of frightened people stumbled into the corridor.

Men.

Women.

Teenagers.

All wearing prison-style uniforms.

All handcuffed.

Celeste stared in horror.

"What..."

Ava whispered, her voice breaking for the first time.

"They're not cargo."

"They're witnesses."

"And if this ship explodes..."

May you like

"...every one of them disappears forever."
